Yu served as an economic policy analyst at the research department of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, a consultant to the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, the chief economist of Huatai Secuities, and a faculty member at the Department of Money, Banking and Financial Markets in the School of Finance of Renmin University of China. Yu earned his Ph.D. in Economics from the George Washington University with full university fellowship, a master's degree from the Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs of the University of Minnesota at Twin cities with full scholarship, and his Bachelor of Engineering from Tongji University. Yu has published some well-cited papers in refereed academic journals, all in English. He launched, Update New England, a quarterly publication at the Federal Reserve and served as its editor. His research has received broad coverage in the mainstream media in the US and China. He is a regular commentator on CCTV, and a board member of the Chinese Chief Economist Forum.
